Five star Giffnock secure league cup final

Giffnock United U21s vs St Andrews BC U21s

Competition: West of Scotland U21’s League Cup Final Venue: Clyde Gateway Stadium, Rutherglen Date: 22/05/11

    Author: Umer Ejaz

A five-star performance by Giffnock United gave them a comfortable performance over a below-par St.Andrews BC side who were reduced down to 10-men late in the second half.
Giffnock were the first ones out of their starting grids to go out on the counter attack, only two minutes were on the clock when Andy Richardson ran down the left and instead of passing he was allowed acres of space to go for a shot but as he struck the ball Stephen McEleny parried the ball away to the left where Danial McClafferty of Giffnock picked it up and hit back across goal to Richardson who’s shot this time hit the side netting.
Only six minutes later and Giffnock were celebrating the goal’s first game, John Lubanski the Giffnock captain attempted to cross the ball in but it got blocked by the St.Andrews defence as the ball came back again to him, he then attempted again and managed to find Danial McClafferty at the back post who wasn’t picked up by the St.Andrews defence and headed the ball past McEleny to make it 1-0 to his side. Three minutes later and Giffnock hit their second of the game, this time David Reid whipped a free kick from the right and McClafferty popped up again to head home his second of the game.
St.Andrews tried to pull a goal back, five minutes later, Mark Barrett tried his luck from thirty yards but he saw his shot go well wide of Mark Coyle’s goal. Two minutes later, Giffnock were nearly celebrating their third goal of the game. Andy Richardson skipped past three St.Andrews players only to see his shot go just wide of McEleny’s right hand post. However, Giffnock were yet once again celebrating their third goal of the game, McClafferty this time turned provider for Chris Stevenson to head his first and Giffnock’s third goal of the game..
However, four minutes later, St.Andrews were forced to make a sub as Mark Barrett went off with a nasty gash to his head after clashing with John Lubanski. Once again, four minutes later, St.Andrews found themselves on the backfoot as a counter attacking Giffnock side tried to settle the game with less than half an hour played! John Lubanski this time found space down the left and ran all the way into the St.Andrews penalty and managed to get a light shot onto the ball, however as the ball was trickling towards the goal, John Lafferty from St.Andrews cleared it off the line.
As half-time went, St.Andrews faced a battle to find a comeback into the game as they were outplayed by a strong Giffnock side.

Half Time: Giffnock United 3-0 St Andrews BC
The second half turned out to be an incident packed game. Only six minutes into the second half Michael Wilson managed to slightly trip Leo Nairn but as the referee awarded a free-kick to Giffnock, Wilson showed dissent to Nairn and was booked. St.Andrews did have a lot of chances to pull a goal back but none of the chances they created came close enough for them to pull a goal back. On the hour mark, Andrew Harkness from St.Andrews managed to find space and took a shot straight at Coyle in the Giffnock goal only to see his shot first parried and then comfortably saved by Coyle in the end.
In the next ten minutes, the game turned out to be a really contested game as the ref had a lot to deal with in giving free-kicks to both teams as a lot of fouls were now beginning to creep into the game. On the seventy first minute, Michael Wilson of St.Andrews BC was substituted but instead of going off at the side he trudged back to the changing room..
However, nine minutes later things got a lot worse for St.Andrews as they were reduced down to 10-men. Lubanksi was given a brilliant ball through the St.Andrews BC defence as he made his way near the St.Andrews penalty area, Christopher Hall ran and grabbed him to the ground, the referee showed no hesitation in sending him off. However, this proved to be the final straw for St.Andrews as Michael McKean scored from the free-kick and give his side a 4-0 lead. It was only two minutes later that Giffnock finished the game off, Lubanksi who put in a man of the match performance played in Chris Stevenson who as he approached McEleny in the St.Andrews goal, did a cheeky lob over him to give his side the fifth goal of the game and his second of the game. Just before full time, Lubanski nearly added a sixth. This time he showed determination running down the right and over powering Andrew Harkness and crossed from the by-line, only to see his shot ricochet off the crossbar.
In the end Giffnock won the league cup in considerable fashion with a great performance of counter attacking football but credit to St.Andrews BC as they never gave up on trying to pull a goal back.
