Well, dear readers (and guest reviewer Big Roy G), this was a tough encounter and County had to pull out all the stops to pull away from Harmony Row, who battled skillfully and with heart all through the game.
It was not a vintage County performance by any manner of means but they did play exceptionally well in patches and scored some crackers, especially the two free kicks from Jack and a brilliant Martin Peters (who is he?) goal from Mark.
The pressure was on the County goal for long spells today, and although there was little Lewis could do to stop the 3 goals, he excelled with a number of crucial saves and his usual safe handling.
Paul had an absolute 'stormer' in the second half, his runs through the centre and on the left wing were a joy to watch, and his two perfectly-taken goals capped a great game;Paul...well done!
Although there were lots of very good individual performances, (including Kevin, Euan, Leo,) Tam and Craig just nicked the supporters' and coaches' MOM respectively. With their superb tackling and challenges they held the defence and midfield together showing composure when winning the ball and distributing it accurately to set up chances... fantastic you two!
The game started off in favour for the visitors, who got an early goal following a good bit of individual skill from their centre forward, possibly their best player. (0-1)
After that County put pressure on the visitors' goal but their defence defended well. Still, it wasn't long before the County boys equalised thanks to a brilliant through ball from Dougie and a cool finish from Jack.(1-1)
Dougie put in a fine performance and was unlucky not to grab a goal for himself.
After the equaliser County turned up the pressure and had chances to go in the lead. Then with 10 minutes of the 1st half remaining, County were awarded a free kick from 30 yards out. There was no doubt who was taking it... Jack. Although he was under a bit of pressure, as the match was very tight, once he struck the ball everyone knew it was headed for the top corner, and that's where it ended-up, glancing the underside of the bar on its way into the net. A scientific shot and a great goal from distance...from the Professor!!! (2-1)
After that County had a series of chances to make it three, but it was Harmony Row who got the next goal: A bit of slack defending saw the ball fall at the feet of the H'Row centre who slammed it into the roof of the net, leaving Lewis no chance. (2-2)
Once again the team responded well and not long after the Giffnock lads were back in the lead thanks to Paul who was played clean through with a brilliant defence splitting pass from Mark. Paul was quite a long way out heading-in on goal when the keeper came out to meet him, he finished it off calmly hitting it past the keeper and into the net. The opposition debated that Dougie was in an offside position but were quickly waved away by the ref.
At half time, subsitutions were made and the coaches sent the team out with clear instructions to defend better in all area of the park, close thing down quicker in midfield, and keep it tight at the back with the aim of conceding no more goals. These plans worked out fairly well and County created numerous chances on the counter attack with Tom making strong runs on the left wing. County then increased their lead with great goals by Jack and Mark to make it 5-2. (Another fabulous free kick from the professor, his hat trick, and a brilliant 5-man move finished by Mark).
The Govan lads hit back to make it 5-3, before Paul went on another one of his mazy runs, breaking through the defence line to finish things off and score his well-earned double. (6-3)
Coaches comments:
"SO THE END OF 2007 HAS COME AND WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN FOR THE COUNTY BOYS, A SEASON OF HIGHS AND A FEW LOWS SO FAR, BUT IT SEES US VERY WELL-PLACED TO PUT IN A CHALLENGE FOR THE TOP PRIZE - THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP!"
